Terms of use for Satakirjastot self-service libraries

A self-service library is a service that allows the customer to use the library independently outside of the library service hours. The Terms of Use effective from 1 October 2019 are applied during self-service hours. In addition, the below terms of use for all Satakirjastot self-service libraries are applied.

Rights and responsibilities of use

The use of a self-service library is free of charge. All holders of a valid Satakirjastot library card have the right to use a self-service library. The customer must also have a personal identification number or a PIN code, which can be obtained from the library during the staff service hours. The guarantor of a cardholder under the age of 15 is liable for the use of the self-service library and the possible misconduct during self-service hours, enabled by the library card held by the young person. The guarantor/guardian may deny their dependent child the right of use of the self-service library. It is also possible to ask for a restriction of use on one’s own library card. The restriction of use will be saved in the Satakirjastot library system.

Any person exiting the self-service library must see that the front door is locked after them and that no other people enter the library premises through the open door. It is forbidden to disturb other customers by inappropriate behaviour and clutter or violate the premises. A temporary prohibition may be applied to a customer for misconduct (cf. general terms of use for Satakirjastot libraries, Loss of borrowing rights). In case of damages the general terms of use for Satakirjastot libraries and Tort Liability Act (412/1974) are applied.

Access control

The customer logs in to a self-service library with their PIN number at a card reader, usually situated outside of the library premises. The library card holder is responsible for keeping the library card and the PIN number out of reach of a third party. Each customer logs in to the self-service library personally and is liable for their use of the self-service library. It is permitted to use a guardian’s library card to let in underage children of the same family. It is also permitted to use a group leader’s library card to let in an interest group or a study group. The end of the daily self-service hours is announced with a request to leave the premises. There is recording camera surveillance in the premises, and possible misconduct will be retroactively intervened.

Services during self-service hours

During self-service hours, material is borrowed and returned using guided lending machines. In case of problems occurring during borrowing or returning, the customer is liable to resolve the matter with library staff during staff service hours. The collections, customer computers, wireless network or photocopier are accessible depending on the library in question. The use of each device is guided in the premises. All library services requiring the presence of the staff are unavailable during self-service hours. These services include acquiring a library card and paying fees, for instance.

Events during self-service hours

Private persons, associations and other third sector societies may use the library premises for general meetings or public events referred to in the Assembly Act (1247/1999) also during the self-service hours. The meetings and events are subject to prior agreement with the library, and a deviation on the log-in policy may be granted. The organiser of the event is responsible for the arrangements and safety of the event. For any other meetings all participants must log in using their personal library cards.
